Main School of Fire Service (SGSP)

SGSP is an academic facility subordinate to the state services and supervised by the Minister of Internal Affairs. SGSP's mission is to raise professional staff with highest possible qualifications in assessment of civilisation and natural threats and protection of life, health, property and other values against threats, as well as to educate students with special focus on patriotic feelings, dedication to public service and respect for discipline in work and duties. SGSP is an organisational unit of the State Fire Service.

SGSP Studies
SGSP educates firefighters of the State Fire Service, officers of other services and guards that are subordinate to the Minister of Internal Affairs. It also trains civilians. The school has two departments. SGSP carries out its scientific and academic activity via the Faculty of Fire Safety Engineering (WIBP) and the Faculty of Civil Safety Engineering (WIBC). SGSP offers daily and extramural studies of 1st and 2nd degree as well as postgraduate studies.

International Cooperation
One of SGSP’s traditional values is its readiness to exchange scientific and academic knowledge and experience across the borders. SGSP has been cooperating with numerous foreign schools and international organisations. Our students travel to Lund University (Sweden), Landesfeuerwehrschule in Hamburg (German), and the Fire Service Department (USA). SGSP also organizes International Rescue Workshops during the annual field exercises for WIBP junior cadets. In 2008, SGSP welcomed rescuers from: Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Germany, Romania and Ukraine. The school also participates in scientific projects that are realised under various international bi- and multi-lateral partnerships.

Research and Scientific Activity
Safety is an interdisciplinary field; it combines science to investigate mechanisms creating threats with managerial skills and with humanities that allow understanding of human reaction to threats. Thus, the area of research at SGSP must be broad and range from scientific to practical. The 2007 projects included 15 studies carried out within the schoolÕs statutory activity, 11 individual studies, commissioned projects (Risk Models for Urban Agglomeration Including Crisis Management System Based on the Example of Warsaw), individual research projects. Some projects were supported by the Ministry of Education and the European Commission; implementation studies were financed by local entrepreneurs. Some studies were carried in cooperation with Polish and foreign schools fire safety, civil protection and environmental curriculum.

SGSP possesses a modern academic base equipped with cutting-edge scientific and research devices, and computer and audiovisual hardware. The school is also proud to offer a container-based smoke chamber for academic purposes, modern study rooms and specialist laboratories. Our students develop their expertise and qualifications by taking advantage of scientific associations active at the school - among others the Association of Fire Safety Engineers and Technicians. The Main Library has a collection of titles related to the areas of fire safety, rescue, civil protection and civil defence, and threat, crisis and disaster management. The school pays great attention to physical condition of its students who can take advantage of popular soccer, volleyball, basketball, swimming and fire safety sports teams. SGSP sports teams rank high in the cyclical sports tournaments both in Poland and abroad. SGSP also has its Academic Choir, which started the first season on 7 November 2005.
